Generic Headshot Profile
Senior UX Technical Writer
Huntress

Kelly Murphy

“So much of cybersecurity is doom and gloom, fear-mongering messages, but at Huntress, that call to be helpful and protect the little guys is inspiring. I'm here for them.”

At Huntress, Kelly’s diverse writing and UX experience—covering firewalls, EDR, endpoint operations, cloud infrastructure, and search engines—proves invaluable. “I’m lucky that my broad range of experience prior to Huntress comes into play every day.”

Kelly’s path in cybersecurity began in 2008 at Secure Computing, where she started as an after-hours customer service representative and first-line troubleshooter. Shortly after McAfee acquired Secure Computing, she transitioned to technical writing for their enterprise firewall products. She later went on to write for Tanium and Elastic. At every company, she’s done both technical documentation and UX writing for products, combining technical curiosity with a savvy awareness of the people on the other side of the screen.

This range of experience, between massive corporations acquiring and divesting smaller companies, privately-held companies, and burgeoning startups exploding past IPO to almost 3000 people strong, has given Kelly valuable lessons about how effective teamwork changes as they scale.

Kelly holds a Master’s Degree in Technical Communication and a Graduate Certificate in User Experience Design. Her Bachelor’s in Interpretation has also been a strong foundation for her writing, emphasizing empathy, identifying goals of others, and how feedback is an opportunity to improve.

What's your favorite cybersecurity tip, Kelly?

“Use a password manager as much as possible and make sure that the password manager master password is actually a passphrase that only you would know. This is as close to an easy button as you can get.”

A lifelong dog trainer, Kelly grew up in a dog-showing family, with her mother being an AKC/UKC judge. Outside of work, Kelly’s life revolves around her horses. She competes, trail rides, and volunteers with a therapeutic riding organization. "If I could afford it, I'd own a horse farm and ride every day."
